Good morning! Today I wanted to address the question: "how long does it take to lose fat?" Well, it varies from person to person depending on your goal. For example, I spent 22 weeks dieting down for my competition last year, but my goal to compete required an extreme amount of fat loss. For the general population client, I recommend spending roughly 8-12 weeks in a caloric deficit before shifting back to a metabolic building phase (reverse dieting). _____
You may be thinking to yourself, "it's gonna take me 8-12 WEEKS TO LOSE 10-20lbs!?!" Short answer- YES! Those diets you see saying "lose ten lbs in 1 week" are gimmicks. If you're losing 10lbs in one week, its probably water weight and its likely you'll gain it right back. So, stop finding the next quick fix. With a healthy diet, there is only has 0.5-2.0lbs of weight loss per week. But, keep in mind weight loss isn't always consistent.
We've all been there, you diet for a few weeks, see some stellar results then all of the sudden, NOTHING. Plateaus in weight loss can occur for any number of reasons, (hormones, stress, sleep, water intake to name a few) but usually it's due to metabolic adaptation. See, when you diet for a prolonged period of time, your body begins to adapt to your lower intake and higher expenditure. The only ways to overcome a stall in weight loss is to stay consistent! Some times our body just needs time to figure it out. If it's been 2 weeks with no changes, it may be time to make some changes to your intake or cardio output. If things start to stall, don't get discouraged because slow progress is still progress.
Dieting is a slow process, but quitting won't speed it up. If you're struggling to lose weight, make an investment in yourself. #TakeTheFirstStep
