About the Artist:
Chris Shary is a freakishly prolific punk rock illustrator from Stockton, California. A dad, husband, and well-mannered high school drama teacher by day, Chris draws and creates art almost constantly during his "off hours", and is a household name in the world of punk. Over the past couple of decades he's created t-shirt and album art for a literal who's-who of punk rock royalty including groups like DESCENDENTS, BLACK FLAG, RANCID, NOFX, GERMS, DWARVES, 7SECONDS, TEENAGE BOTTLEROCKET, AQUABATS, and the list goes on and on. The duality of his lifestyle was even his topic for a TEDxTalk (!) a few months ago in California. https://youtu.be/WahIGSdxOss
Shary and new Low Key Arts Executive Director Sonny Kay have been good friends for the better part of three decades, coming up together in the fertile Denver punk scene of the early nineties as they did. Since Chris designed a fair number of posters for Sonny's promotions in the past, he seemed like the natural choice for this year's VOV poster artist. The more things change, the more they stay the same. Or something like that!
Shary's social media presence (instagram.com/chrisshary) has blossomed the past couple of years and he began creating quick sketches of celebrities and punk luminaries with a Sharpie pen to feed the demand for his work. Some new examples of these sketches will be on display and for sale at Kollective during the month of March, 2018, as well as the "unveiling" of this year's VOV poster print.
